A Christmas Message from Bishop Nigel

Published

While many people will approach this Christmas Eve with a sense of expectation and fun, others are anxious or lonely.

The Bethlehem inn welcomed Mary and Joseph, a young roofless couple. The Christmas Story draws us into the generosity of God’s response to all of us in a less than perfect world. Bethlehem was not expecting the saviour of the world to be born that starry night. But Jesus always comes, whether we are ready or not, to challenge fear and hopelessness with grace and love.

For children and grown-ups alike Christmas is about cards, presents and get-togethers. Over Christmas many of us will enjoy a candlelit service with carols, listening again to the familiar words of the Christmas story. We recognise a warm sense of belonging as well as the opportunity to be generous to others less fortunate.

However you are spending this Christmas I wish you every blessing.
